The New MRI Center
In January 2006, Plantation General Hospital opened a new MRI Center conveniently located inside the hospital. Using the latest technology, all MRI exams take place within Plantation General and provide superior safety.

Plantation General Hospital is pleased to announce the acquisition of a GE 1.5 Signa EXCITE high definition magnetic resonance (HDMR) system. This state-of-the art MRI scanner is the world's first 1.5 high definition magnetic resonance unit. It provides faster, high-resolution images with a shorter, more comfortable scan time for patients. The new MRI unit provides optimal diagnostic capabilities for the assessment of the brain, spine, abdomen, prostate, pelvis and vascular regions, along with orthopedic imaging to include elbow, feet, wrist, hip and ankle.

For additional information regarding the MRI Center or any Imaging service, please contact the Imaging Department at (954) 513- 6050.

4D Ultrasound
Imagine being able to see your baby move before he or she is born? At Plantation General Hospital, you can experience this first hand with a 4D ultrasound. The 4D Ultrasound is the latest in ultrasound technology. It takes three-dimensional still ultrasound images and adds the element of time to the process. The result, live action images of your unborn child. You can actually see your baby moving, sucking their thumb or sticking out their tongue.

A few benefits of 4D Ultrasound are:

  • Gauges the progress of the baby's development
  • Physicians and sonographers have better detection of issues from vascular anomalies and genetic syndromes in the first trimester
  • 4D allows physicians and sonographers to analyze fetal motion and perform exams previously unavailable

For additional information regarding the 4D ultrasound, please call the Ultrasound Department at 954-513-1001.

e-MAR
Whenever a medication is given to you in the hospital, it is documented on a MAR (Medication Administration Record) that is stored in your medical record. Until now, this has been a manual paper process.

Plantation General Hospital has implemented a computer generated or electronic version of the MAR called eMAR & Bar Coding.
This technology is part of our core pharmacy information system where all aspects about your medication orders are recorded. The critical components of this safety technology are bar coded armbands, bar coded medications and safety checks within the eMAR & Bar Coding software.
Benefits of the technology:

  • Reduces medication errors through use of bar code identifiers on the patient armband and medication
  • Makes patient care information readily available to nursing staff during medication administration like critical values and comprehensive allergy and drug interaction information
  • Provides physicians with a comprehensive list of patient medication use

e-MAR also makes it easier for nurses to manage, document and review patient medication use as well as improving the accuracy of medication handling by helping to prevent errors.

PACS
Picture Archiving and Communications System, more commonly known as PACS, enables images such as X-rays and scans to be stored electronically and viewed on video screens, so that doctors and other health professionals can access the information and compare it with previous images and even transmit images between facilities at the touch of a button.

For the past 100 years, film has been almost the exclusive medium for capturing, storing, and displaying radiographic images. Film is a relatively fixed medium with usually only one set of images available. PACS technology allows for a near film-less process, with all of the flexibility of digital systems. It also removes all the costs associated with hard film and releases valuable space currently used for storage. Most importantly, however, PACS has the potential to transform patients' experience of the care they receive.

PACS will allow for fewer appointments will be wasted, fewer operations postponed and less re-testing will be required due to more reliable storage and retrieval of images. It will also increase collaboration among the medical team, as the images can be viewed from multiple terminals and locations by a range of clinicians at the same time.

As we all know it Epson is one of the world’s leading firm in consumer products like printers and photocopiers. And rightly so, Epson has now taken the first step in producing a product (not just a concept) much better than the likes of electronic e-book readers that may just possibly replace our daily news reads in the future.

You will see why I say so just from looking at this image…

Latest technology: Will e-paper replace traditional newspapers???

The fact that the quality of it is so incredibly good, you can barely tell it’s not paper! With a size of 13.4-inch (A4-size), its pixels count is 3104 × 4128 and definition achieves as high as 385ppi.

The researchers, from the University of California, Davis, have developed a system that allows follower robots to use behavioral cues from human leaders and other robots in order to track and follow them. What this means is that robots may soon be able to respond to human emotions appropriately and thus act more naturally even though it’s still not yet possible to implement robots emotions.

These robots would now take in behavioral cues and act accordingly, thanks to mirrors and certain other tracking methods. It seems to have paid off, as the main idea was to reduce the number of instructions a robot might need. Also, compatibility with human behavior would make therobots more acceptable to humans. The ability to follow will likely be essential as robots continue to work alongside people more often than not, such as in office buildings, hospitals and airports.

“As humans, we constantly incorporate other peoples’ current actions as clues (cues) as to what they may do in the future,” Sanjay Joshi of the University of California, Davis, told PhysOrg.com. “For instance, we have a ‘sixth sense’ on the highway to know that a certain car will swerve into our lane soon, based on the driver’s current driving patterns. Then, we may become more defensive in our own driving. In our work, we wanted to begin the process of allowingrobots to use behavioral cues (of humans or other robots), to make the robot’s mission more reliable and accurate. In social work environments populated by numerous people and robots, these types of cues should be abundant.”

SunRed Solar-Powered Motorcycle
One look at these photos and you know this motorcycle is in the concept stage as I cannot remember seeing any of these on the road.

This is the SunRed solar-powered motorcycle that won the Best Innovative Technology award at the Barcelona Int’l Auto Show, this does look pretty cool and anything that is good to the environment and can be classed as gadget or latest technology is good in my books.

Best Innovative Technology

This SunRed project in the near future will result in a life-size prototype of the solar-powered motorcycle, the prototype will be able to store electrical power from captured sunlight and power the motorcycle in the most environmentally-friendly way.

The clamshell looking motorcycle is built that way to optimize the panel’s surface and to make the vehicle not too bulky. The SunRed solar-powered motorcycle is not moving it can store energy for up to 20km (13 miles) and travel at around 50km/h (30 mph).

Most modern electric bikes are designed in the same way as the motor on this solar-powered motorcycle; it is placed right in the axle of the wheel and brushless.

Now we got to remember this vehicle designed by SunRed is just a concept, but the company hopes that this will become a benchmark for future developments of solar applications in different vehicles.

Logitech MX Air Mouse
This is the rechargeable Logitech MX Air Mouse that comes packed with features including the Freespace motion control technology that Logitech are so very proud of.

The Logitech Air Mouse combines different technologies including 2.4GHz RF, MEMS sensors with DSP and lasers for both traditional laser mousing and motion-control.

logitechmxairmouse-2.jpg

This has been done many times before with products like the Gyration Wireless Products (which I own), but Logitech hopes to better previous devices with their latest technology.

The Air Mouse aims to do things a different way by bridging the gap between mouse and remote control.

logitechmxairmouse-3.jpg

Dedicated volume control and pause/play buttons are neatly positioned down the center of the device and you will find a touch-sensitive scroll-panel instead of the standard scroll wheel.

These refinements make the Logitech MX Air Mouse a refreshing change and much better suited to mouse and remote tasks.

What you’re looking at is not just any wall of LCD displays stacked on top of each other to form a large display but is NASA’s highest ever resolution visualisation system. The ‘hyperwall-2′ is 23 feet high and 10 feet wide and consists of 128 screens driven by 128 graphic processing units with a total of 1,024 processor cores capable of displaying a quarter billion-pixel graphics!
Compared to NASA’s original system, which was developed over six years ago in 2002 by the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) visualization team, its original visualisation system consisted of just 49 screens, the hyperwall-2 is certainly a ‘massive’ improvement from its original.
Of course, the hyperwall-2 visualisation system won’t be used for gaming (let’s hope we receive some leaked pics of people trying to ), it will be used for more important things like exploring mars and stuff… Check out the pics and the NASA press release below for full details…

Rooms take shape in the new Medway Campus

Posted on 11:14 AM by Badshah

The first photos are released of classrooms, training and social areas at the Medway Campus, as work gets underway on fitting out the interior of the £86million building ready for students to take up residence this September.

Welcome to the MidKent College Medway Campus!

As the Reception Pavilion, East and Central Wings are handed over to MidKent College, work has begun on fitting out the interiors of the new Medway Campus in Gillingham.

Innovative design coupled with the latest technology is what's on offer at the brand new Campus, opening to students in September 2009. Departments were consulted individually to ensure their requirements for industry-standard equipment, modern computer facilities and spacious working areas were all accommodated.

Furniture and fittings will be delivered from late May onwards, but these images show the latest developments at the site on Prince Arthur Road. The Medway Campus is replacing the two current MidKent College centres at Horsted and City Way, with all courses held at these sites transferring to the new facilities. The West Wing and Performance Pavilion are due to be handed over in the coming months, and staff and students are getting ready to move into this modern learning environment, set to become the heart of further education in Medway.

For those of you that born in 1970s or 1980s, you must be very familiar with the old type sewing machine, where your mom always used it to sew some beautiful clothes with it.

Most of the sewing machine in that moment was mostly using our feet to step on it and it does require a lot of exercise indeed! If you look on the sewing machine closely, you might find that it’s really a wonderful and magnificent invention that ever created.

What do you think, if you combine the old type sewing machine with the latest technology? Isn’t this sound fabulous to you here?

Yep, what you’re about to learn today is to develop a sound visible sewing machine, where you can put all the high technology stuffs, such as equalizers and sub-titles inside the sound visible. By doing this, you’ll change the sewing sound into an awesome visible sound telegraph instantly!

The visible sound sewing machine will take the sound input and convert it into a sound wave of thread on textile. The sewing machine is synonymous with producing products in industry. Hence, it served as a fitting analogy for the project.

Creativi*tea is a creative way up in tea kettles

Posted on 11:07 AM by Badshah

tea kettle
Finished with a polished stainless steel body, a soft heat-resistant rubber handle, lid and a ceramic base, the Creativi*tea by Sarina Fiero is an innovative tea kettle that changes its color, from a darker shade of red to an increasingly more luminescent red, with the change in temperature, courtesy of the Thermochromic technology. The latest technology allows the kettle to boil the water to a precise temperature, giving just perfect tang to your cup of tea. The American designer, with this radical teapot, has put the most recent technology to serve the conventional brewage in style.

MonoTracer? Well here’s another vehicle classed within the motorcycle category but an entirely different concept! The Uno, designed by the 18-year old Ben J. Poss Gulak and his team is a self-balancingmotorcycle that uses a pair of gyroscopes to constantly keep its rider upright. This means it only needs a set of wheels placed together and not like anymotorcycle you’ve seen. It may not look really easy to ride but apparently it’s just controlled by an on/off switch and all you need to do to accelerate is lean forward. If you lean back, it reverses too – there’s something normal motorcycles can’t do!

Latest technology: Uno, the self balancing motorcycle…

I won’t even go into how it was done, it wasn’t simple, but the whole process involved the clever use of spinning mirrors, high-speed DLP projections and lots of calculations in order to get the correct and most precise positioning. The result, Star Wars TIE Fighter brought to life!

samsung's 82-inch Quadhd lcd:now with 120hz

Posted on 11:01 AM by Badshah

Samsung's stream of 82-inch monsters packing the company's latest technology continues unabated, this time a minor update to the QuadHD behemoth we saw at CES brings so-outdated 120Hz motion processing and LED backlighting to keep blur and judder far, far away. We know what you're thinking, its 3840x2160 resolution is no good unless you can write on it, luckily Samsung also has an 82-inch ultra high definition e-Board in its SID 2008 booth. OLED fans take heart, Samsung has reached economies of scale, hopefully meaning reasonably priced (and longer lasting) thin screens are due sooner instead of later. The Korea Times notes LG's at the show as well, showcasing LCD roll-printing technology to replace the photolithography process that currently births the flat panels on our walls, but we simply can't be bothered with a company that's only the number two LCD manufacturer in the world.

Hotels Offer Guests the Latest Technology Tools

The Link@Sheraton lounge in a hotel in Phoenix. Sheraton teamed with Microsoft to stay up to date.

Published: November 10, 2008

Hotels are under such pressure to keep up with their gadget-obsessed guests that they are working with technology companies to regain their edge.

David Kadlubowski for The New York Times

Chris Robertson, left, and Cynthia Carlariello at one of the computers in the lounge.

Sheraton teamed with Microsoft to create its new Link@Sheraton lounges, as part of an overhaul of the brand that includes carving out spaces in lobbies where guests can use public computers to check their e-mail, print boarding passes and record video greetings to send to family and friends.

Westin struck a deal with Nintendo to outfit some of its fitness centers with Wii consoles and games like Wii Fit, a game that uses a balance board to guide players through exercises and yoga poses.

Even smaller brands are turning to technology leaders to equip their public spaces and guestrooms with the latest electronics. The Gansevoort Hotel Group is working with Sony to develop a lounge at its new Gansevoort South property in Miami Beach. The goal is to relocate the traditional business center to a more social setting near the lobby. The lounge will have Sony computers and PlayStation 3 game consoles as well as digital book readers and cameras.

“What we’re trying to do is give people the chance to experience firsthand the latest in technology,” said Elon Kenchington, Gansevoort’s chief operating officer, explaining that choosing the right technology has become as critical as other elements of a hotel’s design.

“It’s an integral part of not only the success of an operation, but also what makes one brand better than another or more interesting to travelers than other brands,” he said.

Establishing a business relationship with a technology company also makes it easier for hotels to keep up with new products and trends. “One of the challenges for hotels is that you buy equipment that everyone wants today, but within 18 months, it’s not considered unique,” Mr. Kenchington said.

By meeting regularly with Sony, he said, “We already have those products within our business model, so we’re not waiting for them or being asked why don’t we have them.”

Technology companies, in turn, have a chance to show off their wares to a desirable demographic. “The same guests that walk through the hotel lobby are the same consumers Microsoft targets,” said Sandra Andrews, hospitality industry solutions director for Microsoft.

In addition to running Windows software, the PCs in Sheraton’s lounges have Web cameras and a Microsoft application that walks guests through recording and sending a video clip. The goal is to encourage people to try a task they may have found too daunting to explore on their own: for example, having guests use Web cameras to say good night to their kids, Ms. Andrews said.

Yet one challenge for hotels is making sure guests are comfortable using the technology and not being forced to wrestle with products that are too complex. That is particularly the case with guestroom amenities, because customers staying for just a night or two do not have the time, or the patience, to master a complicated process to accomplish a generally simple task like finding a television channel.

“If you need your neighbor’s teenage kid to help you figure out how to use something,” said Henry H. Harteveldt, a travel analyst with Forrester Research, “it’s probably too complex for a hotel to implement.”

That is why the James hotel in Chicago has been spending the last few months testing technology made by Control4, known for its home automation systems. On trial in one guestroom, the system allows guests to operate the lights, the blinds, the thermostat and the television using one remote. It can even be used to set a more customized wake-up experience, in which, for example, the TV turns on and gradually increases in volume.

“Everything slowly comes to life in the room,” said Patrick Hatton, general manager of the James, adding that the hotel was taking time to receive feedback on the Control4 technology to make sure the innovations did not create headaches. “The most important thing for us is to make sure the technology is easy to use.”

Another company working with Control4 is the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, which plans to use the system to create a welcome experience at its Las Vegas property, scheduled to open in late 2009. Guests arriving in their room after checking in will be greeted by the drapes opening, the lights automatically turning on and the television displaying a customized message with the guest’s name.

“When you open the door, that’s what will welcome you instead of a dark room where you’re fumbling for a light switch,” said Monika Nerger, Mandarin’s vice president of technology for the Americas.

She said, though, that the main technology challenge for hotels was increasing their Internet bandwidth to keep up with guests doing more file-intensive activities online. The Las Vegas hotel will offer 400 megabytes of bandwidth, more than double the 160 megabytes at the new Mandarin Oriental in Boston.

Given the economic climate, Mr. Harteveldt cautioned that hotels ought to focus on Internet access and other essential technologies that either help justify a higher room rate or attract more guests.

“Hotels have to make sure they address the basics before they think about the fanciful,” he said. “This is not a time for the fanciful.”

The latest technology for your bathroom

Posted on 10:47 AM by Badshah

Desperate to check your email while in the shower, or do you need to check your facebook account for ‘other’ reasons? For now you will have to make do with your iPhone or laptop for those important urges, but other technology is finding its way in to your throne room.

While plasma screens, wireless appliances and Blu Ray DVDs are nothing new for the living room, dining room and even kitchen, bathroom manufacturers are beginning to discover ways and means to implement this latest technology in the shape of both accessories and sanitaryware into this serene space.

Erol Donmez, managing director for VitrA UK, says: “Interactive furniture will be the next product to dominate the bathroom market. Entertainment units comprising televisions, devices in which to plug your ipod and even DVD players will soon be common-place in the more luxurious of bathrooms.”

VitrA has already begun to enter this market with the Espace fridge. A tall unit with integrated fridge, this freestanding piece of furniture is designed for individuals who prefer the finer things in life; be it cooling bottles of champagne to sip while bathing or for keeping cosmetics fresh, the fridge epitomises a new generation in bathroom culture.

Sanitaryware

ufo VitrA boasts association with some of the world’s most acclaimed and innovative designers. The Istanbul collection, designed by Ross Lovegrove, incorporates a clever option available on the WC pan - a cluster of LED lights with a sensor which activates upon movement, designed with those late night trips to the bathroom in mind. The lights will guide you directly to the pan, preventing any fumbling for the light switch in the dark, while adding a novelty to the room in daylight hours.

High Q+ is another designer collaboration between VitrA recently and German designers NOA. An innovative new line, the range combines technology, functionality and modern design while preventing hand-faucet contact, therefore maximising hygiene benefits. Users are able to control the flow and heat of water simply by moving their hands closer to icons on the basin, where the sensors under the ceramic body activate the faucet.

VitrA has also reversed the trend of using LED’s in brassware, instead installing them underneath glass washbasins to indicate cold with blue and hot with red and a medium temperature using amber. The High Q+ basin also has an ambient light option enabling the washbasin to emit a mixture of colour when not in use, introducing an attractive lighting effect into the room.
