Siemens Industry Automation Division this week unveiled the latest technologies and advances in manufacturing processes for Irish industry. The new technologies are designed to improve productivity and competitiveness using integrated diagnostics and simple connectivity via ProfiNet.

Profinet

Profinet from Siemens - latest Technologies for Manufacturing Businesses

The range includes Simatic automation components which support high-speed IRT (Isochronous RealTime) Profinet communication. IRT is especially useful for large machines and equipment with a large number of nodes requiring very short updating times. Products with IRT capability ensure the transfer of high-speed automation data is managed successfully in conjunction with the increasingly high volumes of standard Ethernet data on production and office networks which are less time-critical.

As a further development Siemens also integrates FSU (Fast Start Up) functionality into many Profinet IO devices enabling power up within one second, particularly useful for flexible manufacturing applications, for example, where rapid re-tooling is necessary.

Many of Siemens Profinet products now include integrated web servers that provide user-friendly diagnostic functions for use in monitoring or troubleshooting.

Totally integrated automation suite

As part of the totally integrated automation suite of products, these innovations continue to offer users increases in productivity and performance across the entire manufacturing process and through all stages of the production plant’s life-cycle, from design through engineering, commissioning, operation and maintenance. “Using the latest technologies we can increase productivity from incoming raw materials, through the production and quality assurance processes, and within outbound logistics of packaged goods,” explains Martin Feeley of Siemens Automation & Drives.

The new suite of products was launched as part of a Siemens global technology tour that has drawn OEMs, system integrators and end-users worldwide

“Ireland should continue to invest in infrastructure to enhance our quality of life and ensure our continued economic attractiveness. Siemens has the answers in terms of environmentally friendly energy, public transportation and improved healthcare,” O’Connor continued. top of page

Siemens in Ireland

Siemens has a long-standing tradition of delivering key infrastructure projects in Ireland including the first direct Trans-Atlantic cable in 1874 and Shannon Hydro-electric Scheme which continues to produce green electricity. The company recently completed the largest on-shore wind farm in Ireland for Airtricity. The first electrical railway in Ireland, the Giants Causeway tramway was built by the company in 1882 and brought holiday makers from Portrush to the great natural wonder of the North Antrim coast. More recently in 1984 Siemens delivered the overhead line system for the DART network.

Siemens is one of the world’s leading engineering and electronics companies. The company pioneered electric rail transportation with the first electric railway presented at the Berlin Trade Fair 1879. More recently the company has developed the Metro in Bangkok, Boston, Japan and Germany. Siemens has offices in Dublin, Cork and Belfast and employs more than 1100 people in Ireland.
